Graphene is the New Philosopher Stone
Thanks to vacuum deposition it is possible to make atomically thin materials and these thin materials are often used to make corrosion resistant packaging, mirror coatings, electrically conducting films, and much more. However, it was never conceived that such thin materials could have the power to turn useless waste into gold. Well, a group of scientists from The University of Manchester, Tsinghua University in China and the Chinese Academy of Sciences recently discovered that it is possible to use thin sheets of graphene to extract gold from waste containing only trace amounts of the precious metal. Researchers even compared graphene to the mythical philosopher stone which was believed to be able to turn cheap materials into gold. Researchers also believe that this surprising discovery may be the key to improving the recycling of gold from electronic devices that rarely get recycled and promoting gold sustainability.
