UK Launches World’s First Graphene-Enhanced Road to Combat Potholes and Cut Emissions
UK Launches World’s First Graphene-Enhanced Road to Combat Potholes and Cut Emissions
A groundbreaking infrastructure project in the UK is setting a new global standard for road durability and sustainability. For the first time ever, a public road in Teesside, North East England, has been surfaced with a graphene-enhanced asphalt, promising longer life, fewer potholes, and smoother drives.
Developed by Redcar-based Universal Matter GBR Ltd in collaboration with Tarmac and Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, this innovative material integrates graphene—a single layer of carbon atoms known for its strength and conductivity—into standard asphalt using the Genable Pavement additive.
More than 150 tonnes of modified asphalt were produced at Tarmac’s Coxhoe plant in Durham, then laid at Flatts Lane Country Park, marking the world’s first public application of graphene-enhanced asphalt. The material, previously tested in controlled environments across the U.S. and Canada, is now being evaluated in real-world conditions.
Graphene dramatically improves the mechanical properties of asphalt, reducing cracking and wear while extending the road’s lifespan. This advancement could significantly cut down on the UK's pothole repair costs, which reached £579 million in vehicle damage and £143.5 million in total annual economic burden in 2024.
By minimizing the need for frequent repairs, the graphene road also offers environmental benefits through lower maintenance emissions. As Brian Kent, Tarmac’s Technical Director, noted, this project represents a key step toward more durable and sustainable road networks. Learn more about this topic here.
